Surfer, but with the gap framed as business risk

Where Surfer stops, on the evidence of their own published pages.

Comparison last verified 2026-09-03 — 5 days ago. Current.

First, what Surfer genuinely does well

  • Genuinely good content optimisation and SERP analysis - this is their core and they are good at it
  • AI-search tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, sold as a first-class plan. This is real and we are not going to pretend otherwise
  • Content audit and ranking monitoring at a level a general business system does not match
  • Clear, published, self-serve pricing across six tiers

Read on 2026-09-03. These are observations about the product's SCOPE, taken from what the vendor advertises - not reports of it working badly. We have not audited third-party reviews for this vendor and imply nothing about them.

The gap: Visibility-gap / competitor intelligence engine

Surfer's SERP analysis and content audit genuinely cover part of this - marking it otherwise would be dishonest. The difference is the unit of analysis. Theirs is the page and the keyword; the question a business owner asks is which revenue-bearing service is under-represented against the specific competitors taking that work, which needs the client and revenue side in the same model as the content side.

The evidence

Partial. SERP analysis and content audit cover part of the ground; they are content-level rather than a competitor-intelligence engine across a whole business.

Where RSC actually stands on this

Partial Partial. Competitor observation and gap rows exist; the predictive expected-vs-observed engine is still in build (row 1129).

Verified in code 2026-09-03: SeoCompetitorObservation and the VISGAP rows; predictive engine queued.

The arithmetic

There is no clean product to bolt on - it is the same two-system problem in a different costume. Honest note: RSC's predictive gap engine is partly built. RSC Core ($45) + the Growth pack ($35) is $80 per user / month billed annually - $960 per user / year, one login.

Competitor prices are their own published list prices read on the date shown. RSC prices per user; several of these products price per account for a single user, so check the arithmetic at your own seat count.

Where RSC is behind Surfer, or has not built it yet

Every comparison page on this site carries this section. If we only ever listed our own advantages you would have no reason to believe the rest of the page.

  • Surfer's AI-search tracking is more developed than RSC's. Ours is partly built - theirs is a shipping product with a plan attached to it. If AI-search tracking is the only thing you need, they currently do it better.
  • Surfer's depth of content optimisation exceeds ours. We cover the pipeline end to end; they go deeper on the optimisation step itself.
  • RSC is younger and pre-launch, and Surfer is an established product with a large customer base. Choosing us is a bet on a newer platform, and that is a real cost to weigh.
  • RSC cannot yet send review requests, and our competitor-intelligence engine is partly built.

3 further capabilities we assessed are NOT shown on this page, because we could not attach a dated public source to them. We would rather show you less than show you something we cannot evidence.
“Not advertised” means the capability does not appear on the vendor page we cite, on the date we cite it. That is evidence about what they publish — it is not proof the capability does not exist somewhere in their product.
